November 2010 Workshops
The Art & Science of Sequencing
November 6-7, 12:30-5:30pm (both days)
There are many ways to organize the progression of poses in a class – around human anatomy and physiology, Koshas, Chakras or other qualities. We can also focus the practice on certain areas of asana – such as backbending, hip openers or arm balances – that call for a particular sequence of poses. These will further vary depending upon the relative ability of students in the class, the season of the year, the moon cycle and other considerations.
In this workshop, we will explore the basic elements of safe and effective classes, including various warming sequences designed for specific peak asanas in a class, progressive opening of the pelvic and shoulder girdles in preparation for backbends, ideal placement of core abdominal work and arm balances in general classes, and the appropriate use of pratikriyasana (counterposes, or how to climb down the tree) in the midst of overall vinyasa krama (the placing of asanas in relation to one another in a special way) that makes sense in terms of the human body and spirit. You will leave the workshop better informed on how to creatively fashion sequences of poses that fit with your own teaching style and the needs and interests of your students.

Japanese Anma Massage & Chinese Therapeutics
November 6-7, 12:30-5:30pm With Glenn Kazmierski
Anma massage originated in China and is the oldest form of bodywork known, dating back 5,000 years. Anma is translated as “mother” and is the mother of many other forms of bodywork including Tuina and Shiatsu. This traditional form is still taught in Zen monasteries in Japan. Anma is a invigorating massage that restores and promotes vitality of the skin, muscles, joints, vascular and lymphatic systems. This class is open all who wish to learn these ancient and effective arts of healing.
In this five-hour class students will learn how to do Chinese Cupping, and Guasha to restore healthy circulation and reduce muscular strain to the muscle of the back. The therapeutic use of Medicated Oils will be then be explored through the application of an extraordinary form of massage known as Japanese Anma.
This is a skills class normally taught to students of Chinese medicine but now is being offered to the public.
