Five Workshops & Practices at StudioDC - Washington DC

Breaking Down the Sun Salutations: Alignment, Energetic Actions, and Transitions in the Flowing Sequences

Fri Date: Oct 18, 2013 From: 6:30 PM - 8:45 PM Location: Dupont Circle

The Sun Salutations can get pretty sloppy when we flow through them without being attentive to key alignment principles and energetic actions. Here we will look closely at each of the 12 asanas in Classical Surya Namaskara and Surya Namaskara A & B, exploring their various alignment and energetic qualities how the transitions between them can be approached to make them simpler, deeper and more sustainable. Open to students and teachers.

Sequencing for Deeper Back Bends

Sat Date: Oct 19, 2013 From: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Dupont Circle

The beautifully expressive quality of back bends becomes even more gloriously amazing when we approach them with effective preparation. Looking closely at the varied requirements of flexion, extension, contraction, traction and leveraged back bends, we will explore how different sequences of asanas can make them more safe and accessible to all students. While designed primarily for teachers, this workshop is also open to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of effective yoga practice.

A Back Bending Intensive Practice

Sat Date: Oct 19, 2013 From: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Location: Dupont Circle

Applying the basic principles of sequencing to back bends, this 2-hour intensive practice will offer a model approach to doing the deepest back bends one is meant to do at the present moment. The practice will focus on targeted opening of the shoulder and pelvic girdles as well as creating suppleness and stability along the spine along the path to a concentrated set of backbends, followed by neutralizing twists and other integrative asanas on the path to savasana. Sequencing for Core-Supported Arm Balances

Sun Date: Oct 20, 2013 From: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Dupont Circle

In doing arm support and arm balancing asanas, we ideally cultivate a quality of grounded levity that arises primarily from applying an awakened abdominal core. In making the arm balances even more accessible, we also ideally place them in sequences in which the elements of the arm balances are first developed in standing asanas. In this workshop we will explore the interrelations of specific standing asanas, core practices, and the arm balances they most naturally support, designing class sequencing that introduce these practices appropriately in different level classes.
